The whole boxcutter story was convenient as it allowed for a weapon on the hijacked planes that was not prohibited by regulations, thus taking the issue of incompetent or corrupted airport security out of the picture, and allowing the whole problem to be cured merely by banning all forms of knives. If even one gun was brought onto any of the planes we are suddenly back into the whole issue of airport security, particularly at Logan Airport, and have to question again whether the hijackers were supported by inside help at the airport.
