The Curious Case of Anwar al-Awlaki

Anwar al-Awlaki, former Muslim chaplain and imam, arrested for picking up prostitutes twice (he even, in the famous American formulation, 'crossed state lines' with them!), is the new 'al Qaeda' boogieman for Yemen. He spent a lot of time in the D. C. area (easier access to his handlers), where he met both the Fort Hood shooter and Hani Hanjour, the man famous for being unable to fly a Cessna. He was also pals in San Diego with the two American agents said to be involved in September 11, Nawaf Al-Hazmi and Khalid Almihdhar. Despite these connections and the fact the phone number of his Falls Church mosque was found in the Hamburg apartment of Ramzi Binalshibh, the FBI merely interviewed him after September 11. They later had him in custody on his way leaving the country, but their arrest warrant was mysteriously 'pulled back', and they let him go (FBI: "We don't know how he got out"). All that sounds about right. His handlers pulled the warrant so he could play his role as an 'al Qaeda' recruiter and mainstream media face of 'Islamofascism' (his perfect English makes it easier for Americans to watch him). Oddly, he's not Jewish.
