As far as I can tell, the United States has brokered a deal whereby Israel lets Arafat go in return for not having to face the U. N. Jenin investigation. The Americans seem quite proud of themselves over this, but it sets a horrible precedent. In effect, Arafat became a hostage who was bartered for Israel's continuing cover-up of the atrocities at Jenin. The next time some butchers wish to commit atrocities, will they be able to protect themselves against future investigation of these atrocities simply by having the foresight to grab an important hostage who can later be bartered for secrecy?
