The idea of nuclear weapons is scary; we have an emotional commitment to freaking out about nukes well beyond any operational or strategic utility that they offer. Bleating about how Iran will have nukes in less than 18 months (a claim that Israeli, US, and Saudi hawks have been reiterating since the 1990s) is an easy way of saying “hit those people hard” without the need for any careful strategic analysis.
This is why, for hawks, it is always the right time to strike Iran.  The Oren piece is useful in this regard.  No conceivable deal could achieve what Oren declares that he wants, but of course the point is that he doesn’t want a deal.  He, and other hawks, want the constant threat of US military action, in order to reassure our allies that we will always be prepared to bomb their enemies. There is no conceivable set of nuclear concessions that could make Michael Oren (or Doran, or Kroenig, or Lake, or Kristol, or Cotton, et al ad nausuem) pleased with this deal, because they want military confrontation based on other Iranian foreign policy behaviors.  They’ve known, for quite some time, that the Iranian nuclear program actively detracts from Iran’s ability to pursue its national security goals, both in terms of sucking up resources, and in drawing international sanctions."

“He'll say crazy things to people like he does night missions swimming to Catalina,” said one neighbor, who declined to give her name, saying she was afraid. “He would come … and tell us he would show us self-defense moves.”

An attorney representing the man’s fiancée said that he was the one who contacted police last week about the man’s death and the weapons at the home.

But that’s where the mystery began.

Harland Braun, a veteran criminal defense attorney who has represented celebrities and other high-profile clients, said the story the fiancée told him about what occurred “sounds so bizarre.” The dead man, he said, had told his fiancée that he was an undercover operative for the government and was being watched by the unnamed agency he worked for.

“The problem is that the truth may be unbelievable,” Braun said. “She’ll talk to the LAPD, but will anybody believe it?”

The man’s mysterious past is the reason why his fiancée, Catherine Nebron, didn’t immediately report his death to authorities, her attorney said. Braun said the dead man, whose name he said he couldn’t remember, had been suffering from cancer.

On the Fourth of July, the man, Nebron and two friends were in the parking lot of Bristol Farms on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica when the man began feeling hot and sick, Braun said. They tried to cool him down with ice, but it didn’t work and he died, Braun said.

The fiancée wasn’t sure what to do with the body, but figured the same unnamed agency watching him would know that he died and would come for him, Braun said. Nebron parked the vehicle on Palisades Drive and left it because she “assumed they were tracking him,” the lawyer said.

The woman went on a trip to Oregon, Braun said, and returned to find the vehicle still parked in the same spot. Nebron, he said, is “sort of in a state of shock” over the death of a man she knew for 17 years. She had lived in one room of the house while the weapons were locked in another, the attorney said.

“One of the mysteries of this guy is who he really is,” Braun said.

Coroner Deputy Chief Ed Winter said an autopsy was completed Tuesday but a cause of death has yet to be determined. The man’s body was badly decomposed, he said, and the man’s identity remains a mystery.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said detectives don’t believe the death is the result of foul play. Albanese said the man was suffering from end-stage cancer and did not work for a government security agency, despite the man’s claims about his past.

But questions remained about why the man had amassed so many weapons. On Tuesday, police were still performing background checks on the man’s firearms."

Most importantly, the new nuclear deal will give the United States and Israel time to develop the capabilities they need to carry out a military strike. A frequent criticism of the deal is that Iran will have few, if any, restrictions on its nuclear program after the deal expires in ten to fifteen years. This ignores that the United States and Israel will be similarly unrestricted after the deal’s expiration.
Moreover, while Iran’s nuclear program will be frozen in place for over a decade, the United States and Israel will be free to strengthen their military capabilities. This will be especially important for Israel, which currently lacks the requisite aircraft and payloads to successfully destroy Iran’s Fordow enrichment plant, which is buried deep within a mountain.
The United States is more capable of bombing the enrichment plant. Over the past decade, it has developed the 30,000-pound massive ordnance penetrator (MOP) for the exact purpose of destroying underground facilities like the Fordow enrichment plant.
Still, it’s unclear if the MOP can successfully destroy all Iran’s nuclear facilities. The bomb can reportedly burrow through 200 feet of earth before exploding, but the Fordow plant is buried 250 feet below a mountain and likely reinforced with concrete. As late as 2012, the U.S. military conceded the bunker-buster MOP couldn’t destroy the Fordow plant.
The Pentagon’s current war plans reportedly call for dropping two bunker-buster bombs on top of each other in order to reach the enrichment plant. This requires excellent precision and, despite recent upgrades to the bomb’s internal guidance system, would be extraordinarily difficult to achieve in the fog of war. However, given all the progress the United States has made in building more powerful bunker-busters over the past decade, there is every reason to believe that Washington will have a bomb capable of destroying the Fordow plant in ten year’s time."

It is difficult to criticize the Greek government if there was no sane deal available from the Nazis under any circumstances, something which has now been definitively established. On the other hand, the complete absence of a Plan B is the fault of the Greek government.

1. performance-enhancing drugs have a remarkable effect on athletic performance;
2. those who take performance enhancing drugs tend to beat those who don't;
3. there is oodles of money involved;
4. there is so much money involved that you'd have to be completely naive to think that warnings aren't given to elite athletes of drug tests, particularly in professional sports.

I have no idea whether any particular earner is on the juice or not, but I know with certainty that some very, very, very high percentage of consistent winners is on performance enhancing drugs (and frankly, you can often tell by looking at the cheaters, as the physiques give them away, particularly in those cases where there has been a marked change).  Note how they try to spin this as a sexism/racism thing, but we went through exactly the same crap with Lance Armstrong.  Frum, who is used to fooling the stupid, is right to raise the issue.  It is disheartening to see this level of gullibility, gullibility which is reflected in the horrible general political situation we are in.  Greenwald is in the wrong line of work.

German problems

Any crisis anywhere is as good an excuse as any for commies to call each other names, hence:  "Requiem at an Empty Grave? Syriza's Momentous Day".  I note comment #6 by tobias:

Making the problem not Greek weakness and incompetence in negotiation, but German weakness. The German elites are terrified at the prospect of the combination of their demographic problem and the loss of their competitive advantage caused by the relative cheapness of the Euro compared to how the Deutschmark would be valued.

"Is Merkel Being Irrational?":

"Since the beginning of the crisis, Germany’s position has been one of defending austerity as the only way out of it. This meant “sacrifices” for everyone in Europe: not only for the southern European populations with neoliberal bombs dropping in their backyards, but also for the German working class, which has witnessed a strong deregulation of the labor market, precarization of labor relations, and a loss of purchasing power.
The ideological story sold to the German working class was that the European project would collapse if they bailed out southern Europeans, whose plight was self-inflicted through over-spending and poor productivity. However, it soon became obvious that austerity does not solve any economic and financial problems — it deepens them (debt has grown in relation to GDP in all countries that have tried the austerity remedy).
When Syriza came to power in Greece, there was finally one voice inside the European institutions that could prove this fact and eventually challenge the hyper-neoliberalization of Europe.
But for Germany to accept Syriza’s demands would be to acknowledge that austerity was not a solution but a problem — that Germany’s political and economic agenda over the last seven years was wrong and has completely failed to provide the results it promised. More than this, it would be a concession that the sacrifices imposed on the German working class were actually in vain, and only served to further tilt the balance of power away from labor and toward capital.
German elites are thus willing to let the euro crash (or transform it into something else — an exclusively center and northern European currency, for example) to guarantee their political survival.
There is also nothing irrational about the way they are playing the “blame game.” If Germany forces Greece into bankruptcy (which is bound to happen sooner or later), this would create a domino effect that destabilized the European economy for a period of time. The blame would then be placed on the “stubborn” Greek government that refused to negotiate and to accept the “help” and “aid” that Germany was willing to give them."

'Life' in Greece under austerity: "Life Under Austerity"

"Greek debt crisis: Goldman Sachs could be sued for helping hide debts when it joined euro"  The real damages to Greece and Europe should be enough to wipe Goldman Sachs off the map.  The problem is that all parties on all sides knew they were being defrauded.  The grifter's motto, and the corporate strategy statement of Goldman Sachs, is you can't con an honest man.
